In the perfect teaching, when the six sense faculties are purified, this is traveling four hundred [yojanas]. Breaking through fundamental ignorance and entering the initial dwelling is traveling five hundred. When the practitioners of the two vehicles hear the sūtra, shatter the delusions of ignorance, open the insight and vision of the buddhas, and receive the prediction to become buddhas, this is thoroughly understanding the coarse stages, surpassing five hundred yojanas, and arriving to enter the initial dwelling. This is the beginning of the wondrous stages, obtaining the vehicle of realization, and wandering through the east. If, reaching within the original gate, they further increase the path and decrease births, once again riding the vehicle of realization to wander through the south, this is advancing to enter the stages of the ten practices. The west is advancing to enter the ten dedications of merit. The north is advancing to enter the ten grounds. Furthermore, as the text states: 'When the long lifespan of the Tathāgata was expounded, persons as numerous as the sands of sixty-eight myriad kotis of nayutas of Ganges rivers attained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas'—this is the ten dwellings. 'Bodhisattvas a thousand times more attained the dhāraṇī of hearing and retaining'—this is the ten practices. 'Bodhisattvas as numerous as the dust motes of one world attained the eloquence of delight in speech'—this is the ten dedications of merit. 'Those as numerous as the dust motes of one world attained the revolving dhāraṇī'—this is the initial ground. 'Those as numerous as the dust motes of a major trichiliocosm attained non-retrogression'—this is the second ground. 'Those as numerous as the dust motes of two thousand lands were able to turn the pure wheel of the Dharma'—this is the third ground. 'Those as numerous as the dust motes of a minor chiliocosm will attain bodhi in eight births'—this is the fourth ground. Attaining it in seven births is the fifth ground. Attaining it in six births is the sixth ground. Attaining it in five births is the seventh ground. 'Attaining it in four births' is the eighth ground. 'Attaining it in three births' is the ninth ground. 'Attaining it in two births' is the tenth ground. 'Attaining it in one birth' is equal enlightenment. Surpassing this single birth is surpassing the letter kṣa where there are no words; this is the ground of wondrous enlightenment, the culmination of the wondrous stages.
