Ninth, subsuming and identifying with the three jewels of one essence: true nature is the Dharma jewel; contemplative illumination is the Buddha jewel; auxiliary conditions are the Saṅgha jewel. The dharma-nature is unmoving, hence it is called non-awakening; the Buddha's wisdom accords with the principle, hence the Buddha is called awakening. Harmony in phenomena and harmony in principle, hence the Saṅgha is called harmonious concord. The *Viśeṣacintā-brahma-paripṛcchā* states: "Knowing awakening is called Buddha; knowing detachment is called Dharma; knowing non-existence is called Saṅgha." These are the three jewels of one essence. Therefore the text below states: "The Buddha himself abides in the Great Vehicle"—the Buddha is the Buddha jewel; the Great Vehicle is the Dharma jewel; "According to the Dharma he has attained, by this he liberates sentient beings"—this is harmonizing with principle and further harmonizing with sentient beings, which is the Saṅgha jewel. "The worldly marks are eternally abiding" is called the Dharma jewel; "Having known it at the place of enlightenment" is called the Buddha jewel; "The Guide preaches using expedients"—above harmonizing with principle, below harmonizing with sentient beings—is called the Saṅgha jewel. The three jewels of one essence are neither the one of oneness nor the three of threeness; this threeness-and-oneness is neither vertical nor horizontal, and is designated as wondrous. Running through the seven ranks (and so forth).
