5.53

為諸眾生好樂不同，生善緣不同，知過改惡不同，當說取悟不同，是故如來種種諸說，皆有利益。若隨界內好樂，說前兩教位。若隨界外好樂，說後兩教位。生界內事善，說三藏位。生界內理善，說通教位。生界外事善，說別教位。生界外理善，說圓教位。破界內事惡，說三藏位。破界內理惡，說通教位。破塵沙事惡，說別教位。破無明理惡，說圓教位。緣事入真，說三藏位。緣理入真，說通教位。從事入中，說別教位。緣理見中，說圓教位。為是義故，諸位得興，階差高下無量矣。

Because the inclinations of sentient beings differ, their conditions for generating good differ, their awareness of faults and reform of evils differ, and the appropriate teachings for their attainment of awakening differ, the Tathāgata gave various diverse teachings, all of which bring benefit. In accordance with inclinations within the realms, he taught the stages of the former two teachings. In accordance with inclinations beyond the realms, he taught the stages of the latter two teachings. To generate phenomenal good within the realms, he taught the tripiṭaka stages. To generate noumenal good within the realms, he taught the stages of the shared teaching. To generate phenomenal good beyond the realms, he taught the stages of the distinctive teaching. To generate noumenal good beyond the realms, he taught the stages of the perfect teaching. To shatter phenomenal evil within the realms, he taught the tripiṭaka stages. To shatter noumenal evil within the realms, he taught the stages of the shared teaching. To shatter the phenomenal evil of dust and sand, he taught the stages of the distinctive teaching. To shatter the noumenal evil of fundamental ignorance, he taught the stages of the perfect teaching. For entering the true by relying on phenomena, he taught the tripiṭaka stages. For entering the true by relying on principle, he taught the stages of the shared teaching. For entering the middle from phenomena, he taught the stages of the distinctive teaching. For perceiving the middle by relying on principle, he taught the stages of the perfect teaching. For these reasons, the various stages arose, with immeasurable gradations of high and low.
