As for *vyākaraṇa*, stating the kalpas for the three vehicles, six destinies, and nine paths to attain buddhahood; or that after such-and-such years one will attain the state of a śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha; or that after such-and-such years one will receive retribution in the six destinies—all these are called prophecies. Now, in the manner of conferring prophecy, the Buddha's mouth emits five-coloured light: from the upper two canines it emerges to illuminate the three evil destinies, and from the lower two canines it emerges to illuminate humans and devas. Within the light he expounds impermanence, non-self, and tranquil nirvāṇa. Those who encounter the light and hear the Dharma find peace and joy of body and mind in the three paths; among humans, the crippled and infirm are cured; the devas of the six desire heavens feel revulsion toward sensory pleasures; the devas of the form realm feel revulsion toward the joy of dhyāna. The light illuminates the ten directions, performing the Buddha's work everywhere, returns, circles the Buddha seven times, and enters beneath his feet: this prophesies the hell realm. If it enters the shanks, the thighs, the navel, the chest, the mouth, between the shoulders, or the crown of the head, this prophesies the buddha-path. The *Treatise* (*Dazhidulun*) does not mention a light prophesying asuras; this must be because the asuras are subsumed under the ghost realm, casually situated between the thighs and the navel.
