As for the distant benefit, it refers to when the sixteen princes at the dwelling of the Buddha Mahābhijñājñānābhibhū assisted in transformation and propagation, jointly striking the two drums of poison and heaven. The arising of good has shallow and deep; the death of afflictions has slow and prompt. Beginning with human and heavenly good and ending at the large tree is shallow benefit. Beginning with the most real of the initial mind and ending with the most real of the final mind is deep benefit. Beginning with destroying non-good and ending with destroying the dust-and-sand [delusions] is slow death. Beginning with destroying fundamental ignorance and ending also with destroying fundamental ignorance is prompt death. The slowness and promptness of death are the power of the poison drum; the shallowness and depth of the arising of good are the power of the heavenly drum. Therefore the text states: "The Dharma King who destroys existence has appeared in the world; according with the desires of sentient beings, he preaches the Dharma for them." This is the meaning of the passage concerning the two drums. The meaning of destroying existence is as explained previously.
