[Section] 7: In determining the coarse and the subtle: if within the traces, the already attained ten coarsenesses are regarded as coarse, and the ten subtleties are regarded as subtle; the not yet opened ten coarsenesses are regarded as coarse, and opening the ten constitutes the subtle, it is fully as explained before. Within the traces, whether relative to the coarse and the subtle, or opening the coarse [to reveal] the subtle, this subtle is not different from the subtle of the original source; yet speaking of its initial attainment, initial attainment is coarse. In the original source, having been previously accomplished, whether coarse or subtle, or opening the coarse [to reveal] the subtle, it is also not different from the subtle of the traces; yet because it was previously attained, previous attainment is called subtle. Furthermore, within the traces, phenomenon and principle being initially attained is coarse, while in the original source, phenomenon and principle having been previously attained is subtle; principle and teaching, teaching and practice, substance and function, provisional and real, and so forth within the traces are also like this. Furthermore, if one has not yet disclosed the traces to reveal the original source, one understands only the coarseness and subtlety of phenomenon and principle within the traces, and can never understand the coarseness of phenomena in the original source, let alone understand the subtlety of principle in the original source! Even Maitreya did not fathom it, how much less could anyone else! If one discloses the phenomenon and principle in the traces, this immediately reveals the phenomenon and principle in the original source. One also knows that dependent upon the phenomenon and principle in the original source, one can project down the phenomenon and principle in the traces. Since the traces depend on the original source, the original source is subtle and the traces are coarse; since there is the distinction between original source and traces, they are spoken of as coarse and subtle. The subtle principle is neither trace nor original source, being the inconceivable One. Principle and teaching, teaching and practice, substance and function, provisional and real, past and present, and so forth, are also like this.
