Second, citing ancient explanations. Master Rui's preface says: 'When not yet open it is called *kumuda*, when about to fall it is called *kamala*, and when in its prime bloom in the middle it is called *puṇḍarīka*.' Master Yuan says: '*Puṇḍarīka* is a metaphor for the opening of the lotus; yet its substance changes with time, and its name shifts with its colour, hence there are three names.' The *Mahā-[parinirvāṇa]-sūtra* also says: 'The lotus flower among human beings, the *puṇḍarīka* flower.' Since both names are listed together, there should be the distinction between general and specific. Here we take 'lotus flower' as the general, and '*puṇḍarīka*' as the specific designation. Daolang says: 'Bright white; or translated as red; or translated as most fragrant.' All of these have the meaning of blooming in full splendour; mentioning *puṇḍarīka* encompasses them all!
