Sixth, skillfully cultivating the factors of the path: how could one merely know this unobstructed and obstructed and nothing more? One should cultivate the factors of the path and advance through the dharma-gates. That is, contemplating this view of existence, down to the ineffable view, as all relying on form and being filthy and impure—this is the foundation of mindfulness of the body. If receiving the feeling of existence, down to receiving the ineffable feeling, all rely on the three feelings, and feeling is suffering—this is called the foundation of mindfulness of feeling. Contemplating the conceptions and impulses arisen from various views as all being non-self—this is called the foundation of mindfulness of phenomena. Contemplating the mind of various views as impermanent from thought-moment to thought-moment—this is called the foundation of mindfulness of mind. Contemplating these four contemplations is called obtaining correct mindfulness within conditioned dharmas; having obtained this mindfulness, the four inversions are subdued; this is called the foundations of mindfulness. Diligently cultivating the four contemplations is called the four right exertions. Cultivating within a concentrated mind is called the four bases of psychic power. Because the five wholesome roots are born, they are called the five roots. The five roots increasing and growing to block various evil dharmas is called the five powers. Concentration and wisdom being harmonized and balanced is called the seven limbs of awakening. Moving peacefully along the path is called the eightfold noble path. Here we do not address the factors of the path in terms of stages, but merely discuss the thirty-seven in terms of general practice. If one cessation-of-mind gate produces the thirty-seven factors, the other cessations of mind are also like this. In the truth of the path in the Abhidharma, this should be extensively distinguished (and so forth).
