Seventh, skillfully cultivating antidotes: those with sharp faculties enter directly; if one does not enter, one should cultivate the auxiliary paths. Therefore, the treatise says: 'The twelve dhyānas and so forth are all dharmas that assist in opening the gate.' When correct wisdom is weak and obstructions can arise, one cultivates auxiliary paths as support. The treatise says: 'If sensual desire arises, teach the cultivation of impurity, the eight liberations, and so forth; if one lacks mastery in the objective realm, one should teach the eight bases of mastery; if the objective realm is not broad and universal, one should teach the totality bases. If one has little merit, one should teach the immeasurable minds; if one desires to transcend form, one should teach the four formless realms.' These and the like are all auxiliary paths, dharmas assisting to open the gate, unlike the non-Buddhists who give rise to craving, views, and arrogance regarding the fundamental dhyānas.
