8.29

若於字不了名無明，於字起愛恚是諸行，分別字好醜是識，識於字名名色，字涉於眼名六入，字塵對根名為觸，納領染著即是受，纏綿不捨是愛，竭力推求是取，取則成業名為有，有能牽果是名生老病死，苦輪不息，是則十二因緣本。

If one does not understand characters, it is called ignorance; giving rise to craving or anger toward characters is formations; distinguishing characters as beautiful or ugly is consciousness; consciousness regarding characters is name-and-form; characters entering the eyes are the six sense bases; character objects confronting faculties are contact; receiving and clinging to them is feeling; entanglement without letting go is craving; striving and seeking is grasping; grasping then constitutes karma, called existence; existence can pull forth retribution, called birth, aging, sickness, and death, the wheel of suffering unending: this is the root of the twelve links of dependent origination.
