If one knows that ink-written characters are formed through the combination of paper, brush, mind, and hand; that if one analyzes each single character, no single character can be found, and if one analyzes each single dot, no character can be found either—then there is nothing that is found [as an object], and the mind and hand are not found as agents. With neither agent nor object, who is it that knows agent and object? This is the root of the wisdom of all modes (sarvajñatā). Although characters are not characters, through not being characters they are characters: due to the mind there are dots, from dots there are characters, from characters there are sentences, from sentences there are verses, from verses there are lines, from lines there are scrolls, from scrolls there are cases, from cases there are sections, from sections there are piṭakas, and from piṭakas there are various discriminations. This is the root of the wisdom of the paths (mārgajñatā). Although they are neither characters nor non-characters, they double-illuminate both characters and non-characters. This is the root of the wisdom of all aspects (sarvākārajñatā).
