Using the analogy in terms of sameness: from beginning to end, all equally are gold; the ordinary person and the perfect teaching are alike the real mark. Using the analogy in terms of difference: at first the stone differs from gold; next, gold differs from utensils; utensils differ from the elixir. The colour of the elixir is purely transparent, resembling clear oil, soft and wonderfully fine—how could it be the same as rings and bracelets? Their forms diverge and their colours differ; thus they are not of one kind. This distinguishes their gains and losses in terms of granting and denying, refuting and synthesizing.
