Sixth, on discerning by means of awakening: the characteristic of the dharma is genuinely correct, truly as explained above. Yet if practice has not yet tallied with principle, how can it be termed a truth? In vain do the four explanations labour: pursuing awakening only engenders delusion, hearing of flour one calls it soft, hearing of snow one calls it cold, hearing of a shell one calls it hard, hearing of a swan one calls it moving, yet in the end one is unable to see the true colour of milk. Roaming at night in the dark of emotion, how could one reach the truth? Calling out and begging for food provides no principle of satisfaction. Clinging to oneself as real and calling the rest false speech, 'this exists and that does not', right and wrong mutually arising, further increases drifting and wavering—how could this be called a truth?
