Some say: ‘If those who receive these various doctrines each receive benefit, then none of the various explanations can be wrong; if one listens without awakening, none of the masters' explanations can be right. The idea of this single master is that value lies solely in awakening; awakening should properly be taken as the scriptural purport. The Great Sūtra says: “If there are fixed characteristics, that is a dharma of saṃsāra and the mark of the Māra king; the Buddhadharma has no fixed characteristics.” Therefore, the Tathāgata speaks of the non-path as the path, and speaks of the path as the non-path. One should know that awakening alone is to be followed.’ I personally say: if awakening is the central purport, it is the realization of the effect, not the practice of the cause. Answering north when asked about south, the directions are thrown into confusion. Moreover, definitively taking awakening as the central purport is fixedness itself; how can it be called non-fixed? There are very many commentators; they cannot all be cited.
