One should make two kinds of fourfold analysis: there is the gradual-perfect, there is the perfect-gradual, there is the gradual-gradual, and there is the perfect-perfect. The 'gradual-perfect' refers to the seven provisional stages outside the principle collectively opening the Buddha's knowledge and vision and beginning to see the perfect principle. Seeing the perfect principle genuinely comes about because of the seven provisional stages outside the principle gradually entering the perfect cause; hence it is called gradual-perfect. The [other] three propositions of the gradual-perfect are as discussed below. The 'perfect-gradual' is: when one first enters this perfection, one collectively contemplates the three truths and sees the principle of true reality, with no difference between beginning and end; however, in phenomenal practice, one is not yet fully equipped and must study and train further. In terms of first entering the perfect, it is called 'perfect'; advancing to cultivate higher practices is called 'gradual.' The 'gradual-gradual' is: from the second abode up to equal awakening, this is the gradual-gradual within the perfect family, not the gradual-gradual outside the principle. The 'perfect-perfect' is: reaching wondrous awakening is also called gradual-perfect, and also called perfect-perfect. The perfect principle was already perfect previously, and now phenomena are also perfected; hence it is called perfect-perfect. Furthermore, the perfect-gradual is like the first abode; the gradual-gradual is like from the second abode on up through the thirty minds; the gradual-perfect is like from the first ground onward; and the perfect-perfect is wondrous awakening itself.
