Furthermore, this power can destroy the fruits of the two vehicles. The two vehicles fear birth and death, enter emptiness to grasp realization, give rise to the notion of tranquility and the notion of having already crossed over, and fall into the pit of the three unconditioned states. Their suffering of death or equivalent to death is already like rotten seeds that will never sprout again, where the wise physician folds his hands and prescriptions are of no avail. As for how the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] can cure icchantikas, that is easy: the mind and intellect of an icchantika are not extinguished, and anyone who has a mind will become a buddha, not being definitively dead; curing them is not difficult. The two vehicles reduce the body to ashes and extinguish wisdom: reducing the body to ashes means form is not eternally abiding; extinguishing wisdom means mental deliberation is already terminated. They are scorched sprouts and rotten seeds, moreover situated on highland plateaus, both deaf and mute, with no turning back forever; they are abandoned by all lords of teachings, and the prescriptions of all sūtras are ineffective. Now, the original Buddha's wisdom is vast, and the wondrous medicine of the Dharma is excellent: the physical body is not reduced to ashes, like pure lapis lazuli in which internal and external forms and images all appear; their mind and wisdom are not extinguished, opening, displaying, awakening to, and entering the Buddha's knowledge and vision. It causes hired menials to be entrusted with the household estate of bodhi, and on highland plateaus confers the Buddha's lotus flower. Their ears simultaneously hear the sounds of the ten dharma realms; their tongues, in accordance with all kinds of beings, expound the Buddha's voice, causing all to hear. Being able to use a single sense organ universally for all functions—this is the power and function of this sūtra.
