Fourth, contemplation of mind: one contemplates a single thought of ignorance as being itself illumination. The Great Sūtra states: "That which is without both ignorance and illumination is ultimate emptiness." Wisdom of emptiness illuminates ignorance, and ignorance is immediately pure. For example, if a person detects that there is a thief, the thief can do nothing. Since one is not defiled by ignorance, the path of afflictions is pure. Because afflictions are pure, there is no karma; because there is no karma, there is no bondage; because there is no bondage, there is the sovereign self. Since the self is sovereign and not bound by karma, who receives this name-and-form, contact, and sensation? Without sensation, there is no suffering. Since there are no suffering aggregates, who undergoes alteration and extinction? This is the virtue of permanence. Since a single thought of mind is endowed with the twelve links of conditioned arising, one constantly contemplates these conditions with the contemplation of permanence, bliss, self, and purity. When thought after thought resides within the secret store, constantly practicing this contemplation, it is called being entrusted to the sacred womb. When the practice of contemplation matures, the stage of the womb is completed. When one breaks through ignorance, it is called emerging from the sacred womb (and so forth).
