Now, being born through transformation has three differences: First, those who have not severed distinctive afflictions at all and are born through transformation are those of the Tripiṭaka two vehicles and the three vehicles of the shared teaching. They are analogous to ordinary mortals bound to the earth in fragmented [lifespans], who have not subdued view and thought [afflictions] (and so on). Second, those who subdue distinctive afflictions and are born through transformation are persons of the thirty mental stages in the distinctive teaching who practice the Middle Way, subduing [afflictions] without yet severing them, analogous to the expedient paths of the Hīnayāna in fragmented [lifespans] (and so on). Third, those who sever distinctive afflictions and are born through transformation are like those at the first bhūmi or the first abidance who sever afflictions. They are analogous to the first fruit [srotāpanna], who, although having severed the [afflictions of] viewing the truth, still has seven rebirths; they are also like this. If one is born without yet having severed or subdued them, one uses expedient practices, with the true uncontaminated as the cause and ignorance as the condition. If one has subdued or severed them, attachment to the Dharma in accord with the Way is the cause, and ignorance is the condition for being born in the transformation land (and so on).
