Opening the coarse and revealing the subtle: Others say, 'The Brahmā Net [Sūtra] is the bodhisattva precepts.' Now I ask: 'What kind of bodhisattva precepts are they?' If they reply, 'They are the bodhisattva precepts of the tripiṭaka or shared [teachings],' then there ought to be a separate assembly of bodhisattvas. Since the assembly is not separate, how could the precepts be different? Moreover, if one separately explains bodhisattva precepts, what separately are the pratyekabuddha precepts? Now we explain that among the three vehicles of the tripiṭaka teaching there is no separate assembly, so there cannot be separate precepts for bodhisattvas and pratyekabuddhas. If one understands them as bodhisattvas of the distinctive or perfect [teachings], that is acceptable. Why? Outside the shared assembly of the three vehicles, there are separately bodhisattvas, and therefore there are separately precepts.
