Third, discerning their characteristics: worldly wisdom in India reaches at most up to [the heaven of] neither-perception-nor-non-perception. What is prized here [in China] is centered on loyalty and filial piety, the five elements, the six arts, astronomy, geography, medicine, divination, physiognomy, military strategy, commerce, knowing a thousand kinds of herbs and trees, and recognizing the names of ten thousand sorts of birds and beasts. Furthermore, having no hatred or love when smearing the left [arm with sandal paste] or severing the right, attaining the fundamental concentrations, generating the five supernormal knowledges, stopping a river in the ear, turning Indra into a sheep, inhaling and exhaling wind and clouds, and stroking the sun and moon. The dharmas are worldly dharmas; the concentration is immovable concentration; the wisdom is immovable emergence. Seeking fame and profit, increasing views and craving, known by the worldly mind—therefore it is called worldly wisdom.
