4. The stage of the heat dharma: through the contemplations of specific and general mindfulness, one can produce a simulated understanding of the contemplation of the sixteen truths and obtain a portion of the Buddha-Dharma. It is like the smoke rising when drilling for fire, or like warmth arising in the spring sun; drilling into the object with wisdom produces a simulated understanding, and understanding is compared to heat. Again, it is like gathering flowers and grasses in spring and summer, which naturally generates heat; gathering various wholesome dharmas with the wisdom of the four truths, as wholesome dharmas accumulate through fumigation, the wisdom-understanding is able to arise; hence it is called heat. This is the first stage of the internal ordinary person; disciples of the Buddha possess it, while non-Buddhists do not; this is called the stage of the heat dharma.
