3. Clarifying the stage of the faith-liberated: this is the follower by faith who enters the path of cultivation and changes names to become a faith-liberated person. A dull-faculty person relies on faith and progresses to produce true understanding; hence they are called faith-liberated. This person's realization of fruits has three kinds, namely the three fruits, and so forth. Those who realize the first fruit, at the sixteenth path, corresponding to subsequent knowledge, immediately realize srotāpanna. Srotāpanna translates as 'practicing the outflow-free.' The Tattvasiddhi explains: 'This is still an individual counted in the path of seeing'; explaining that realizing the fruit is immediately entering the path of cultivation serves well to clarify the meaning of practicing the outflow-free. In terms of what is severed by the path of seeing, briefly stated, the three fetters are exhausted; extensively stated, the eighty-eight entanglements are exhausted. Seven lives remain, and they will never reach an eighth, and so forth.
