4.16

If one can cultivate the nine notions, one eliminates these six bandits: the notion of death breaks the two desires for deportment and speech. The notions of bloatedness, decay, and being devoured break the desire for physical appearance. The notions of blood-smearedness, blueness, and putrefaction break the desire for colour and form. The notions of the skeleton and being burned break the desire for smoothness. The nine notions universally eliminate the desire for the persons to whom one is attached. Furthermore, the notions of being devoured and dispersion eliminate attachment to pleasing persons. As these nine eliminate desire, they also attenuate anger and delusion, shaking the mountain of the ninety-eight dormant afflictions. Although it is the initial gate of impurity, it can accomplish the great matter—just as, clinging to a corpse in the ocean, one can cross over (and so forth).
