Third, in clarifying the subduing and severing in the stages of the perfect teaching: at the five grades, one has already perfectly understood the one real four noble truths; one’s mind, thought after thought, corresponds with all the pāramitās of the dharma realm; throughout one’s whole being there are no inverted views of deviance, bias, or the like; and one perfectly subdues the branch, adventitious, and root afflictions. Hence this is called the patience of subduing. The initial mind in the other teachings lacks this quality. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says: “Those who practice the Mahāyāna, though possessing only physical eyes, are called having the Buddha eye.” The bird chirping inside the egg surpasses all other birds. For example: the subduing heat of the Small Vehicle is found in the Buddha-Dharma, but not among non-Buddhists; now this patience of subduing is found in the perfect teaching, but not in the [other] three teachings.
