Within the realm, because the suffering of the three evil destinies is heavy, one first severs view, next thought, and only later reaches nescience. Outside the realm, suffering is light; therefore, first the branches and later the root. Moreover, thought and nescience do not obstruct biased truth; in order to see the true principle, one first eliminates view. Dust-sand [afflictions] outside the realm are afflictions on the substance; being distant, they can obstruct principle, so one first eliminates the distant obstruction and next removes the proximate obstruction (and so forth). Furthermore, in the Tripiṭaka [teaching], bodhisattvas in their final bodily existence and two-vehicle practitioners who transcend stages sever view and thought simultaneously, or also sever thought first (and so forth). Those who do not transcend stages sever them successively. The shared teaching also has the two senses of transcending and not transcending. The distinctive teaching severs them successively; the perfect teaching severs them simultaneously. The question of successive order observes only a single path (and so forth).
