In the preceding four parables, there are four instances explaining ghee. The four teachings explain the Buddha's wisdom differently, but since all are called "Buddha", they equally refer to the Buddha's wisdom as ghee. The two Buddhas of the tripiṭaka and shared [teachings] do not elucidate the middle path; they merely take the wisdom of the two truths of the ultimate fruition-Buddha as ghee. In the distinctive teaching, ascending to the stages destroys ignorance, whereby one can become a Buddha; it takes the wisdom of the principle of the middle path as ghee. In the perfect teaching, the first abode attains the wisdom of the middle path, which is also called ghee. The Yingluo [jing] states, "the World-Honoured One of sudden awakening": this wisdom of the first abode is precisely ghee. The first two [kinds of] ghee are provisional and not real, and hence there is the teaching but no actual person. The ghee of the distinctive teaching is provisional in name but real in principle; the ghee of the perfect teaching is real in both name and principle. For this reason, the preceding three stages and five flavors are all crude, whereas the single flavor of the perfect teaching is entirely wonderful.
