If sentient beings, beginning from the ordinary stage, upon hearing the Avataṃsaka, immediately see the principle and enter the Buddha's wisdom, this is killing in the blood-milk. If they had previously attained the ten abodes and now attain awakening in the Avataṃsaka, this is killing in the curdled milk. Those who awaken at the ten practices are killing in raw butter. Those who awaken at the ten dedications of merit are killing in clarified butter. Further awakening across the various stages is killing in ghee. If in the past one was initially at the stages of nominal and resemblance [awakening] within the perfect teaching, and now attains awakening upon hearing the Avataṃsaka, this is also killing in milk, and also killing in curdled milk, raw butter, and clarified butter. If one was previously in the stages of the various abodes, various practices, and so forth, and now hearing the Avataṃsaka further advances on the path and decreases rebirths, this is killing in ghee. And so forth.
