Fourth, clarifying the crude and the wondrous: if one speaks of saving beings through spiritual penetrations, not only does one transform one's own body to match their direct retributions, one also transforms one's own realm to match their dependent retributions. As the Yingluo says: 'Giving rise to responses to all realms, giving rise to responses to all sentient beings.' If responding to match direct retributions, this is manifesting as the forms of the ten dharma realms; if responding to match dependent retributions, this is matching the places upon which the ten realms depend. If responding to match the four evil destinies, using compassion that contemplates evil karma to perfume the dhyāna of non-defiled transformation upon transformation, one responds by making forms and substances of hells and so forth: black hair wrapping the body, monkeys, deer, horses, great vultures, quails, asuras, and such forms, which each and every one sees, sharing in their activities. If responding with human and divine bodies, this uses compassion within the contemplation of good karma to perfume the dhyāna of non-defiled transformation upon transformation, making bodies of the good destinies: like the bodhisattva in his final body, who with correct wisdom enters the womb, takes seven steps upon falling to the ground, washes hands and feet, purifies himself with a willow twig, takes a consort and father a child, grows weary of the world and leaves household life—up to divine forms, it is likewise so, with each and every one seeing and sharing in their activities. If responding by making the [figures of] the two vehicles of the Tripiṭaka, this uses compassion of analyzing emptiness to perfume the dhyāna of non-defiled transformation upon transformation: giving rise to the forms of old monks, together with the saṃgha practicing the poṣadha, vinaya, and rules of conduct, with each and every one seeing and sharing in their activities. If responding to the shared teaching, this uses compassion of embodying emptiness to perfume the dhyāna of non-defiled transformation upon transformation, making responses that embody phenomena: contemplating unproduced habituations, responding to suffering, emptiness, and so forth as all unobtainable, with each and every one seeing and sharing in their activities.
