Now, taking these transformations of environment and person, when contrasted with the deliberate supernormal powers of the three teachings, they are all designated as crude. For example, a painting, though one exhausts thought and expends every effort upon it, in the end never resembles reality; this is called crude. But when a bright mirror reflects a face, it resembles it spontaneously; this is called subtle. Expedient supernormal powers are like a crude painting; the spontaneous responsiveness of the Middle Way directly facing and directly responding is like a clear mirror, and is therefore subtle.
