The lotus formed and situated in open space, its reflection casting upon clear water, illustrates manifest capacity and manifest response. Its reflection casting upon turbid water illustrates hidden capacity and hidden response. Its reflection casting upon water with wind and waves illustrates both hidden and manifest capacity and response. The Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra says that the shadow of a tree in darkness and the nighttime reflection casting upon water illustrate neither hidden nor manifest capacity and response. These illustrate the wondrousness of stimulus and response.
