Third, in terms of teaching and practice as the original source and the traces: originally receiving the teaching of the former Buddha as the original source, there is then the practice of cultivating the cause to attain the fruition. Because the teaching expresses the principle, practice is able to arise; because practice accords with the teaching, the principle is able to be revealed. Although original source and traces are distinct, they are an inconceivable unity. The text says: "All phenomena from the beginning are constantly of the characteristic of quiet extinction. When the Buddha's disciples have practiced the path, in future worlds they will become buddhas (and so forth)."
