As for ink color being jing, serving as the root of dharmas: If one gives rise to anger over ink characters and cuts off another's life; if one gives rise to lust over ink characters and commits theft or sexual misconduct; up to giving rise to delusion over ink and producing wrong views: one should know that ink characters are the root of the four evil destinies. If over ink characters one gives rise to loving-kindness and renunciation, up to producing right views, one should know that ink characters are the root of humans and gods. If one knows that ink characters are neutral karmic retribution, and that neutrality is the truth of suffering; if one gives rise to defilement toward retributive form, that is the truth of accumulation; knowing that characters are formed by causes and conditions, and are suffering, empty, and non-self, is the truth of the path; since one knows characters are non-characters and does not generate delusions regarding characters, the cessation of all afflictions is the truth of cessation: this is knowing the four truths of characters. Knowing the four truths of characters can generate heat and summit, whether the stages of approach or fruition, the liberation of the worthy and holy: one should know that ink characters are the root of the śrāvakas.
