If one can know characters to be non-characters, ignorance ceases, not proceeding to formations, up to not proceeding to aging and death; with the cessation of ignorance, aging and death cease: one should know these characters are the root of pratyekabuddhas. If one knows that characters are identical to emptiness—not empty after being annihilated, but the nature of characters is inherently empty, within emptiness there being neither craving nor anger, up to neither wrong nor right, characters being unobtainable—who is it that knows characters? How could sentient beings deludedly generate grasping and rejecting? Raising compassionate vows, practicing the six perfections, saving sentient beings, entering the limit of reality, yet there being no sentient beings who attain extinction and crossing over: one should know these characters are the root of bodhisattvas.
