I privately say: taking prajñā as the root of the vehicle corresponds, in the present sūtra, to the white ox, not the substance of the sūtra. Taking sarvajñā as the root of the vehicle corresponds, in the present sūtra, to the fruit accomplished at the place of awakening (bodhimaṇḍa), and is likewise not the vehicle's substance. That the causal vehicle is narrow is a vertical meaning; that the fruit vehicle is broad is a horizontal meaning; neither is the vehicle's substance in the present sūtra. The mind corresponding to prajñā, non-attainment, proximate, distant, and so forth, in the present sūtra are all adornments and attendants, not at all the vehicle's substance. Why suddenly raise disputes over the skin, fur, branches, and leaves! With such noisy contention, who could discern it? Someone cites the *Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa*, taking the six perfections as the vehicle's substance: skillful means transports beings out of birth and death, and compassion transports and gathers sentient beings; in the present sūtra, prajñā is the ox, the five perfections are the adornments, skillful means is the retinue, and compassion is the canopy; none of these are the substance of the vehicle.
