Fifth, discerning passage and blockage: Like the jewel of the army commander, accepting and rejecting appropriately, pacifying the strong and comforting the weak. Knowing the faults and perils of birth and death is called blockage; [knowing they are] identical to nirvāṇa is called passage. Afflictions distressing and disturbing is called blockage; [knowing they are] identical to bodhi is called passage. Beginning from the four views of the non-Buddhists up through the four gates of the perfect teaching, one recognizes passage and blockage in all of them; grasping at each and every stage is blockage, while obliterating distinctions into the wondrous at each and every stage is called passage. If one does not recognize the smooth and the perilous among all dharmas, not only will practice not advance, but one will also lose the precious treasure.
