The four gates of the Tripiṭaka [teaching] accord with phenomena and are shallow and close; therefore, the facilitating is crude; they only expound biased truth, so the facilitated is also crude. The four gates of the shared teaching embody phenomena as the Great Vehicle and skillfully deliver beings in accordance with reality; hence, the facilitating is subtle; the three vehicles realise it partially, so the facilitated is crude. The four gates of the distinctive teaching are the skillful means of the instructional path; hence, the facilitating is crude; they expound entry into the perfect truth, so the facilitated is subtle. The four gates of the perfect teaching are the real discourse of the path of realisation; hence, the facilitating is subtle; reaching the perfect right in the midst of phenomena, the facilitated is also subtle.
