In the next text, it first explains the central theme (zong), and next explains the essential (yao). If one opens expedients and reveals the real, it is nothing other than one's own practice; if one establishes expedients for the sake of the real, one must convert others. It directly indicates cause and effect as the central theme. Next, in explaining the essential: explaining the central theme by means of the essential, though the meaning of the central theme is clear, the meaning of the essential is not yet evident; hence, in explaining it again, it still points to cause and effect. Because it embraces all, it is called "essential". Next, in the simile, regarding "the main cord" and so forth: wei means to tie. Among the essentials of a net, none is greater than the main cord; the corner of a garment may be understood accordingly. From "Therefore it says" onward is the conclusion.
