From 'the present conditions' onward directly reveals the present gain. The phrase 'receiving self-practice' is spoken in terms of the ultimate aspect of the faculties: one must reach the Buddha's own practice before it is called gain. In terms of the teaching master illuminating the faculties, it generally refers to both self and other. From 'culminating in the Buddha['s realm]' onward directly brings forth the characteristics of the function: speaking generally, the origin and traces each have the severing of doubts and the engendering of faith; speaking specifically, augmenting the path and diminishing births belongs solely to the origin gate. Now, following conciseness, we take the arising of faith and augmenting the path as the trace gate, and the severing of doubts and diminishing births as the origin gate. 'Culminating in the Buddha's realm' is simply the provisional and real of the ten suchnesses, which is why it says 'only a Buddha and a Buddha.' Next, regarding the benefits, when it says 'in the physical body, obtaining forbearance in the physical body,' and so forth: before the bhūmis and before the abodes is the physical body; ascending the bhūmis and ascending the abodes is obtaining forbearance in the physical body, meaning that within the physical body one is able to shatter fundamental ignorance and obtain the forbearance of non-arising. The phrase 'dharma body,' and so forth, means that ascending the bhūmis and ascending the abodes to shatter fundamental ignorance, casting off the physical body and dwelling in the reward land, is called the dharma body; when one's position resides in equal enlightenment, it is called the final mind. If the trace gate only benefits the physical body and obtaining forbearance in the physical body, the origin gate advances to the dharma body and the final mind of the dharma body; what it benefits encompasses both, which is why it says 'not only.' Ever since the manifestation of traces, those receiving transformation have gradually expanded; as for those who obtained distant and recent benefits, the merit lies in the Lotus Sūtra.
