The five flavors of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra] transform, yet they are just a single milk; the three illuminations of the Avataṃsaka differ, yet they are just a single sun. Now, expanding the Avataṃsaka's simile of the flat earth to correspond to the latter three flavors of the Nirvāṇa [Sūtra], although the numbers are not equal, their meanings match completely. Furthermore, the Nirvāṇa uses the cow as a simile for the Buddha, and the milk coming forth from the cow is a simile for the Buddha's initial preaching of the great; after the milk has come forth, its flavors transform, which still constitutes a partial simile, so later in this text the meaning is established that the five flavors all come forth from the cow. It is not as good as the Avataṃsaka's simile of the sun for the Buddha and the light for the preaching of the teaching: the sun's conditionless compassion comes forth without coming forth, and being prompted by the faculties of the multitude, it illuminates without illuminating; thus, it causes the high mountains, dark valleys, and flat earth to differ, while together they receive the light of the teaching and ultimately return to equal illumination. Therefore, the two sūtras are used, and the two meanings complete each other.
