Third, in the critical evaluation, there are two: first, evaluating the ranks and stages; next, evaluating opening and combining through the four propositions. The first text also has two: first, evaluating the ranks and stages; next, from "later ages" on down, exhortation and admonition. The first also has two: first, evaluating the ranks; next, from "these various" on down, evaluating the stages. The former is the Yingluo; the next is evaluating the Nirvāṇa and the Large Perfection of Wisdom Sūtra. Ranks and stages complement each other to jointly manifest one meaning; contemplating the mind does not require critical evaluation. The first question is as in the text. In the answer, the words "attachment to dharma" mean attachment to the dharma of the true path. As for the intent in the next text: although the Nirvāṇa is used, one must not grasp it rigidly. Why? Unless one has realized it, one cannot know it. Generally speaking, clarifying stages is only for receiving the ordinary and inferior, and so forth. In this there are two: first, fear of losing the Buddha's intent; next, from "like this" on down clarifies that the various stages cannot be fathomed except by sages. In the first text, where it says "If one exclusively matches up the Dharma gates" up to "separate understandings and separate attachments," and so forth: regarding such perfect stages, if one does not illustrate them with the gate of forty-two syllables, does not take the threefold contemplation in one mind as practice, and does not dissolve them through the intent of the layers of ignorance, but merely exclusively matches up the Dharma gates of the sequential five practices and ten virtues of the Great Sūtra, searchers will mostly generate sequential, separate views.
