Next, the question and answer is to eliminate substantialist views. The first question is as in the text. In the subsequent answer there are two: first, refutation; next, from 'Because of having no intrinsic nature' downward, establishment. In the first part, forming the four propositions: if one adheres to the four attachments, one must first refute intrinsic nature, and only thereafter can one point to emptiness and speak of the four; therefore, stimulation and response each have four propositions. The four propositions of stimulation: living beings can stimulate on their own; they can stimulate on account of response; there is stimulation because of the conjunction of stimulation and response; and there is stimulation apart from response and apart from stimulation. The four propositions of response: the Buddhas can respond on their own; there is response on account of living beings; there is response because of the conjunction of stimulation and response; and there is response apart from response and apart from stimulation. Therefore, capacity and response are each refuted completely by means of the three provisionalities and four propositions, and only then does one make the four explanations with the conventional four siddhāntas.
