12.42

所言機者，可發為義，發有近遠，是故不同。若下有上機則通因果，所謂下果求於上果，亦可下因發於上因；若上有下機則唯在果，所謂下果求於上果，亦可下果發於上因。如佛界機在地獄者，謂雖發心求於佛果，破戒墮獄於彼可發成地獄機，餘八準此。

As for what is called 'capacity,' its meaning is 'capable of being aroused.' Arousing has the near and the far; therefore, they are not the same. If the lower has the upper capacity, it extends to both cause and fruition: namely, a lower fruition seeks an upper fruition, and a lower cause can also arouse an upper cause. If the upper has the lower capacity, it resides solely in fruition: namely, a lower fruition seeks an upper fruition, and a lower fruition can also be aroused from an upper cause. For instance, when the capacity of the Buddha realm is in hell, this means that although one aroused the aspiration to seek the Buddha fruition, breaking precepts and falling into hell, there can be aroused therein the capacity of hell; the remaining eight are modeled on this.
