Tenth, in the benefits of the reward [land], there are three parts: first, generally presenting the classes of persons; next, from “only ignorance” onward, explaining the marks of benefits; third, from “if differentiating” onward, directly distinguishing the identity and difference of the land’s substance. In the first part, “two persons among the eight categories” refers to those before the bhūmis in the Separate Teaching and before the abidings in the Perfect Teaching who are in the land of common residence; upon gaining entry to this rank, they advance to sever ignorance and are born in the reward land. “Another two persons in the expedience land” refers to the latter two of the aforementioned four persons. These two persons previously entered the ranks where delusions of view and thought as well as ignorance were severed and were born in the expedience land; in that land, they advance to sever ignorance and are also born in the reward [land]. In the next text, the phrase “the three worthy and ten noble ranks abide in the reward [land]”: although the terminology appears to be that of the Separate [Teaching], the meaning must rely on the Perfect [Teaching], because the realized path of the Separate is identical with the Perfect Teaching; that is, the ten bhūmis of both places are spoken of together.
