Next, in setting forth the method: 'method' means the manner [of practice], and is also called 'dharma-characteristic' (dharma-lakṣaṇa). As for the method of propagating the sūtra, whether one employs only the real or is also permitted to employ the provisional—it is to reveal this meaning that he says 'setting forth the method'. This again has two parts: first, the correct explanation; next, from 'nowadays' onward, the refutation and establishment. The first text also has three parts: first, explaining the dual employment; next, explaining the exclusive [use of the] real; third, from 'it also says' onward, resolving doubts. The first text has two parts: first, the explanation; next, from 'this then' onward, the conclusion. The first again has two parts: first, correctly explaining the use of the three to assist the one; first, from 'only the bodhisattva' onward, explaining the intention of assisting. In the first text, where it says 'the sūtra text permits using the Separate to assist the Perfect': the sūtra says, 'If they do not believe this Dharma, then among other profound Dharmas show, teach, benefit, and gladden them'; that which is profound and yet 'other' is precisely the Dharma of the Separate Teaching. Entering the bhūmis is termed 'profound'; prior to the bhūmis is termed 'other'. Next, in the refutation and establishment, there are two parts: first, the refutation; next, from 'skillfully propagating' onward, the establishment, which correctly sets forth the characteristics of propagating the sūtra.
