In the first seal, the five aggregates are spoken of; in the second seal, it is said that all are without self; the third seal is the fruit, and hence is called quiescent extinction. If one speaks of impermanence, it shatters the external "what belongs to self" of the five desires. If one speaks of non-self, it shatters the internal self. Self and what belongs to self being shattered, it is therefore quiescent extinction, nirvāṇa. When the practitioner contemplates impermanence, revulsion and detachment immediately arise; having already become revulsed by suffering, one clings to that which contemplates, and therefore there is the second contemplation of non-self. Searching for that which contemplates until it cannot be found—this is all dharmas having nothing upon which to depend, merely returning to quiescent extinction; for this reason, the seal of quiescent extinction is spoken of.
