In the second part, concluding the intent, where it says "in order to reveal the functions of the ten subtleties, ten are briefly spoken of" and so forth: first, as for correlating the functions within the traces with the ten subtleties within the traces, one should rely fully on the earlier text explaining the ten subtleties, and by comparing them it will naturally become clear. Next, as for the ten subtleties: since "refuting" refutes delusion in order to reveal the subtle, it employs the subtlety of wisdom. Since "abolishing" abolishes the teaching, and the teaching is what is spoken, it employs the subtlety of exposition. Since "opening" concerns the principle, and the principle is the object, and "converging" concerns practice, it should employ the subtlety of practice. Since "abiding" was originally the Buddha's original intent, and the Buddha's original intent employs only the One Vehicle, it is the subtlety of the vehicle. Since "abiding in the three" concerns the Buddha's provisional wisdom, and the provisional gives rise to responses that accord with capacities and adapt to beings, it employs the subtlety of response. As for "abiding in the neither-three-nor-one": the dharma-nature does not correspond to either provisional or real; the vehicles of humans and devas are not the provisional of the three teachings, nor are they the one of the real principle; without this double negation, how could supernatural penetrations be aroused? Thus it employs supernatural penetration. "Concealing the three" employs the subtlety of ranks: the three dharmas are always required, and therefore they must be concealed; concealing the three crude ranks is precisely employing the eternally abiding subtle rank. "Abiding in the three" employs the subtlety of retinue: provisionally conforming to the three while always revealing the one—without a subtle retinue, one would not have this function. "Abiding in the one" employs the subtlety of benefit: like abiding in a single stage while employing the three benefits, ultimately leading to the attainment of the one real benefit.
