次開章解釋中二：先列章，次解釋中初大意者，大略而言，五時教中前之四時當部被物，而不須明設教多少、開合增減對帶等意，意在何之？於中為三：初明說之根本，次「說餘」下正明大意，三「若能」下結勸。初文者，約佛自證本不可說，若被此土機緣，須假立聲教。

Second, under opening chapters to explain [the text], there are two parts: first, listing the chapters; second, in the explanations, regarding the first, the general overview: broadly speaking, in the teachings of the five periods, the previous four periods addressed beings within each respective section, without needing to clarify the intent behind establishing more or fewer teachings, their opening and combining, increasing and decreasing, or their comparisons and accompaniments—what was the intent behind them? Within this there are three parts: first, clarifying the root of the teaching; second, from "teaching other [sūtras]" onward, directly clarifying the general overview; third, from "if one can" onward, concluding with an exhortation. As for the first passage, from the standpoint of the Buddha's own realization, it is originally inexpressible; if beings with conditions in this land are to be reached, verbal teachings must provisionally be established.
