Third, in traversing the various teachings, there are two parts: first, generally matching the five flavors against ordinary persons and the four teachings; next, each single teaching possessing all five flavors. The first text has two parts: first citing the sūtra, and next explaining the metaphor. In each possessing all five: first briefly indexing them, and next separately explaining them; the text naturally divides into four, fully as in the third record of Zhiguan. Within each single teaching there are the three of sudden, gradual, and indefinite; thus not only is the designation of the five flavors pervasive, but how could there be any obstruction in the three teachings? As for "transcending the fruits indefinitely": since within each single teaching the metaphor of the five flavors is used to illustrate the gradual, if one's past habituation manifests so that one does not traverse the five flavors but can suddenly transcend, this is called sudden; according to the difference in manifestation, it is called indefinite.
