Next, in explaining the teachings by incremental numbers, the reason for establishing this gate is precisely because although the doctrinal gates are many, they do not go beyond opening the provisional from the real and integrating the provisional into the real. Taking this as an example, the general import of all doctrinal gates can be understood. Within this there are naturally two parts: first the traces, next the origin. The first, the traces, has three parts: the preface, the explanation, and the conclusion. The first is as in the text. Next, in explaining the single dharma, there are also two parts: first, directly explaining opening and integrating; next, the general conclusion. The first also has two parts: first, opening the various ones from the great one; next, opening the small one from the great one; both first open and then integrate. When it first says "one vehicle," all take the Mahāyāna within the four teachings, hence it says "all seek the Buddha fruit." What is called the "origin" is the perfect one vehicle. Next, under the two dharmas, there are two parts: first explaining opening and integrating, and next the general conclusion. Next, under the three dharmas, it only lists two kinds of three dharmas; the characteristics of opening and integrating should also be discussed, and the text is brief and may be seen. Next, the two kinds of four dharmas are as in the text. Next, under the five dharmas, there are also two kinds that differ; within the five there are also horizontal and vertical fives: first it lists the two fives, and next the two openings and integratings. Next, under the six dharmas, there is only one kind, and it then lists seven and eight; within this, it first lists them, and next, from "First opening" onward, indicates the characteristics of opening and integrating. Next, as for the two dharmas of seven and eight, opening and integrating are discussed in terms of the characteristics of dharmas: opening becomes eight, and integrating becomes seven.
