Regarding using the single voice: as for "having wisdom with skillful means is liberation," etc.: wisdom is the real, and skillful means is the provisional; the two meanings are mutually identical and must not be separated. Others who use the five periods only obtain skillful means without real wisdom, so Vimalakīrti says, "skillful means without wisdom is bondage." Therefore, applying skillful means without real wisdom is called compassion of craving and views, which is [the state of] the bodhisattvas of the Tripiṭaka Teaching. Speaking generally, except for [compassion] without conditions, all are named the bondage of skillful means. Thus, prior to the bhūmis in the Separate Teaching and emerging from emptiness into provisionality in the Shared Teaching, all are named craving and views. If there were only the single voice without provisional wisdom, not only would skillful means be bondage, but wisdom would also not be liberation; hence Vimalakīrti says, "wisdom without skillful means is bondage," which is the emptiness wisdom of the two assemblies. Speaking generally, bodhisattvas of the Shared and Separate [teachings] who enter emptiness are all named [as having] wisdom without skillful means. Now, using this meaning to criticize their use of teachings: if throughout the flavors one uses the real, although it is called the single voice, if there is no responding to capacities, no rebuking, washing, and purifying to produce curd and clarified butter so that, arriving at the Lotus Sūtra, they are able to enter the single real, this is called lacking skillful means. If one uses the gradual enticement and benefit of the five periods, one loses the equal single voice of all the flavors, which is called lacking wisdom. Hence we now criticize it. The meaning is identical to bound wisdom and bound skillful means.
